Monkeys Fighting Robots is excited to announce that Eisner Award-winning creators Sergio Aragonés and Mark Evanier are teaming up once again to conclude the epic storyline of Groo and the gods in GROO: GODS AGAINST GROO, beginning this December from Dark Horse Comics.

The new series will cap off the saga that began in GROO: FRAY OF THE GODS and continued with GROO: PLAY OF THE GODS. Evanier and Aragonés will co-write the series, with Aragonés working as penciller and inker. The two will be joined by Carrie Strachan on colors, and Stan Sakai on letters.

About GODS AGAINST GROO:

He is either so greatly feared or favored wherever he goes, Groo’s earthly reputation causes a Groo deity to arise in the heavens! While Earthbound Groo hungers, his Divine Groo alter ego unleashes chaos! Plus, Sergio’s legendary back cover Rufferto strips return!

James Tynion's Tiny Onion Substack comics come to print through Dark Horse
Citation:

Writer James Tynion IV will bring several comic stories he created for his Substack newsletter to print through Dark Horse Comics, with new print-first stories to follow down the road, announced through Tynion's newsletter Empire of the Tiny Onion and The Hollywood Reporter (opens in new tab).

Tynion's Tiny Onion Studios (the name given to his line of Substack comments) will come to Dark Horse as its own line, curated by Tynion himself. The first two titles planned for release through Dark Horse will be physical releases of comics previously published on Tynion's Substack.

First up is Blue Book, created by Tynion alongside artist Michael Avon Oeming and letterer Aditya Bidikar, which releases starting in February. Blue Book recounts famous (or infamous?) tales of alien encounters, starting with the story of the supposed abduction of married couple Betty and Barney Hill.

Blue Book will also feature a series of 'True Weird' backup tales, starting with the story 'Coney Island' by Tynion and artist Klaus Janson.

Then there's The Oddly Pedestrian Life of Christopher Chaos, coming in June 2023, created by Tynion and written by Tate Brombal, with art by Isaac Goodhart, colors by Kurt Michael Russell, and letters by Aditya Bidikar. The Oddly Pedestrian Life of Christopher Chaos stars the eponymous Christopher Chaos, a teen mad scientist who gets wrapped up with a monster-hunting cult.

Following the release of Blue Book and The Oddly Pedestrian Life of Christopher Chaos, Tiny Onion will release new, print-first material through Dark Horse, though no new titles have been announced yet.

"Blue Book and Christopher Chaos are just the beginning. There's a whole universe of characters and concepts around the Christopher Chaos title I'm hoping that Tate, Isaac and I get to explore in our time there," Tynion tells THR.

Dark Horse Comics presents the finale of legendary writer and storyteller Mark Millar’s (Civil War, Kingsman) powerful Jupiter’s Legacy saga. Joined by world-renowned artist Tommy Lee Edwards (Jupiter’s Legacy Requiem, Mother Panic) and letterer John Workman (Sonic the Hedgehog, Doom Patrol), Jupiter’s Legacy: Finale is the epic five-part finale of Mark Millar and Frank Quitely’s superhero story. Covers for issue #1 include main cover art from Tommy Lee Edwards and variants by Frank Quitely (Jupiter’s Circle, New X-Men), Julian Totino Tedesco (Sir Edward Grey, Witchfinder: The Mysteries of Unland, The Walking Dead Deluxe), and Skottie Young (Usagi Yojimbo: Ice and Snow, Black Hammer: Age of Doom).

In the final volume of Jupiter’s Legacy:

The lineage of America’s superheroes is on the brink. They’ve grappled with internal scandals, personal demons, and the constant threat of raising children in a world teetering on the edge of destruction. The struggle to understand the origins of their powers and the looming threat of heroes and villains to humanity has been a constant battle. Now, the superheroes find themselves trapped and murdered on an alien world, while the enemies of Earth, who have long envied our planet, seize the opportunity to launch their invasion.

“We started this book in 2012,” said Millar. “When Barack Obama was still in his first term and now we’re finally finishing it, twelve years older and hopefully wiser. It’s been the longest story I’ve written in my career and an honour to work with some of the greatest artists in the modern industry. I had this plotted on my board a couple of years before and it’s so satisfying to see it all come together at last. I’m so proud of this book and want to thank everyone for their patience. I hope you enjoy it as much as we enjoyed making it. What other book out there can promise: The secret of the universe contained within?”

Read the conclusion of Millar’s masterpiece, Jupiter’s Legacy: Finale #1 (of 5), when it arrives on October 16, 2024. Pre-order at your local comic shop for $4.99.

Five years (and a few abandoned ideas) later, the seeds planted at that dinner are now a reality. The duo is teaming for FML, an eight-issue comic from Dark Horse due out in November.

For DeConnick, the book is deeply personal, as her teenage son and daughter helped inspire the surreal coming-of-age series centering on the relationship between a mother and her son.

Issue No. 1 is narrated by Riley, a heavy metal kid who uses his ballpoint pen and notepad to process the horrors of modern high school life — from active shooter drills to social anxiety. Issue No. 2 is told from the perspective of Riley’s mother, an aging punk cartoonist with a true-crime obsession. Together, the two narratives paint a picture of a mother and son trying to survive a Portland plagued by wildfires and the coronavirus pandemic. Against that backdrop, there’s a murder mystery — and even the transformation of a character into a monster.

As DeConnick notes, her son is growing up in a moment in which conversations around masculinity often have the word “toxic” used in association. That has DeConnick grappling with how to help guide her son as he heads toward adulthood, and it’s a theme she poured into the book.

“I want my kids to be able to wrap their brains around the idea that there have been ways that a toxic framing of masculinity has been behind a lot of bad behavior,” DeConnick tells The Hollywood Reporter. “It doesn’t mean that it’s a bad thing to be a man.”

Though the mom, brother and sister characters in FML have similarities to the author and her children, the family has discussed how a character is not the person who inspired it.

“It’s just a starting place of an idea,” says DeConnick, who adds her kids have embraced being involved in the book. “My aim is not to embarrass you. Even if we all agree that that character is not you, I still don’t want you to be made uncomfortable by anything.”

DeConnick and López are joined by colorist Cris Peter and letterer Clayton Cowles, both of whom worked with DeConnick on Bitch Planet, her most recent creator owned title, which ran from 2014-17.

The scribe notes that the comic book industry has changed quite a bit in the decade since she launched Bitch Planet. It’s harder than ever to draw attention to projects, so she is experimenting with new ways to engage readers. She put Easter eggs into her newsletter, including one that directed people to a website for a fictional band featured in FML. A savvy reader even messaged the band, asking to book them for a wedding. DeConnick is also exploring appearances on true-crime podcasts, given the book’s connection to the genre.

As for getting to once again work with López, DeConnick notes that he seemingly draws faster than she writes, and he is not afraid to kill his darlings. “He doesn’t mind tossing things out,” says DeConnick of the artist, who is more than willing to discard pages if better ideas come along.

It's a busy few months for Hellboy fans, with a new (and Mike Mignola approved) movie on the way. Now, Newsarama can exclusively reveal that a two-issue sequel to one of the best Hellboy comics of recent years is also incoming.

Giant Robot Hellboy Returns is the follow up to last year's limited series, which saw Big Red become a Big Mech. Giant Robot Hellboy Returns will once again by written by Mike Mignola himself and drawn by Duncan Fegredo, colorist Dave Stewart, and letterer Clem Robins. Fegredo will also be handling the series' main covers. A variant cover by Our Bones Dust artist Ben Stenbeck (pictured in the gallery below) will be available for #1, with #2 receiving a variant from James Harren.

"What started as a funny drawing – A joke – has taken on a life of its own," said Mignola in a statement about the new comic. "And watching Duncan breathe life into this thing is pure joy."

Dark Horse's official synopsis for the first issue gives us a hint of the story – and it sounds like Hellboy will be embarking on an undersea odyssey in the new comic:

"After Hellboy is kidnapped and connected to a massive mecha-Hellboy for a mission on a mysterious, faraway island, Giant Robot Hellboy disappears. Scientists comb the sea looking for him but find more than they bargained for when an interdimensional portal threatens to pull them in – or let monsters of unknown origin out."

Giant Robot Hellboy Returns #1 will be published by Dark Horse Comics sometime in 2025.

Nouveau titre par Mark Millar chez Dark Horse avec Vatican City : mini-série en 3 épisodes dessinée par Per Berg et débutant en avril 2025.

Writer Mark Millar’s next Dark Horse series will be a survival adventure story set in the one place vampires can’t go. Vatican City, a three-issue series by Millar and artist Per Berg, is set during a vampire apocalypse that has wiped out all of humanity, except for about 2,000 tourists and Vatican staffers who are safe in a place filled with vampire-repelling holy water, relics, and crosses. While the humans struggle inside the city, the vampires wait patiently outside, and being undead, they have plenty of time. The first issue will go on sale on April 9, 2025, with an MSRP of $5.99 and a main cover by Berg, with variants by John McCrea and John Kalisz.

"I’ve had this idea for years, Assault on Precinct 13 with vampires, tourists and staff safe behind the holy relics in The Vatican while the rest of the world outside has been taken down by the forces of darkness,” Millar said in a statement accompanying the announcement. “I wrote it into The Magic Order as a little subplot in volume 3, but really wanted to flesh it out and tell the whole story. Vatican City is my big chance.”
