Marvel Namor #1 (of 8)

Source Marvel

Even alone and imprisoned, Namor the Sub-Mariner is a force to be reckoned with.

In NAMOR (2024) #1 by Jason Aaron, Paul Davidson, and Alex Lins, the former King of Atlantis languishes in a prison cell on the surface for his crimes against humanity. Resigned to his fate, Namor has no intention of returning to his underwater kingdom—but without him, the seas boil with a violent war between seven kings vying for his throne.

Though he chose to abstain from this conflict, the conflict has found him in a special first look at NAMOR (2024) #1. One page finds the Sub-Mariner wallowing in his cell as the seas rage just outside his window. In another page, he reminisces about his younger days at the height of Atlantis' glory, only to recall an attack by a terrifying undersea creature in another. Back in the present, he finds himself tangled in the tentacles of a squid-like figure, who he attempts to shake off by flying through the air. Finally, he observes his bloody handiwork as the sea he once called home reclaims his would-be assassin's body.

"For a long time now, I've wanted to do a Namor story like this, something that's very much a dark exploration of one of truest antiheroes, while also serving as a roadmap and a redefinition of the entire undersea world," Aaron told Marvel.com. "In the same way I used THE WAR OF THE REALMS to explore the various lands and denizens of Thor's particular corner of the Marvel landscape, this book is meant to guide us through the various exotic cultures and wondrous locales of the deep sea kingdoms in a way we've never seen before."
