Death is a part of life for almost every major superhero, but for DC's Resurrection Man, it's just part of the job. And later this year, he's going to be using his uncanny ability to live, die, repeat (with a new superpower each time) to save the universe in new comic book series Resurrection Man: Quantum Karma.
Announced Thursday by DC Comics, Resurrection Man: Quantum Karma will see the creative team behind Image Comics' critically acclaimed Blue in Green - writer Ram V (The New Gods, Detective Comics) and artist Anand RK (Batman: Urban Legends) - reunite for this six-issue Prestige format series that's part of DC's adults-only Black Label imprint. For V, it's been a story he's been waiting to tell for over six years.
"This is a story I’ve wanted to tell since I first started writing for DC,” Ram V says in the announcement. "It's lingered and stayed and got its hooks into my mind and my love and excitement for the character and story has only grown."
Who is DC's Resurrection Man?
Originally conceived in the late '90s as a revamp of Marvel's Mr. Immortal (who appeared in the Disney+ She-Hulk: Attorney at Law series), DC's Resurrection Man debuted in 1997 by Guardians of the Galaxy writers Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning, along with artist Jackson 'Butch' Guice. Resurrection Man is the moniker for a South Carolinian man named Mitch Shelley, who finds out that if he dies he miraculously comes back to life with all his memories (sometimes with a lag), and with some new superpower related to his previous life. With the nature of superhero comics and the reboots, revamps, and returns, Resurrection Man was literally built for this new series.
"Part of the joy of writing comics for me, is getting to reinvent, reimagine characters in a way that speaks to my own preoccupations and joys; with Resurrection Man: Quantum Karma, I hope readers will share in my excitement as Anand, Mike and Aditya and I tell a story of endless lifetimes, saving universes and falling in love, spanning the length of all existence," Ram V said in a statement about the new title.
Ahead of this new series, there are several previous Resurrection Man series on the DC Universe Infinite digital subscription platform if you are so interested.

In Resurrection Man: Quantum Karma, Ram V and Anand RK are confronting their hero with someone who has his powers - with a twist.
"After living and dying his latest life, Shelley awakes with a new purpose to go along with his latest power: saving the universe. This version of Resurrection Man must battle across time and space against a sadistic Word War II internment camp captain who has inherited a twisted version of Shelley’s abilities," reads DC's description of the series. "As the lines of cosmic order begin to blur, Mitch Shelley will literally die to save the universe, more than once."
In a tie to the past, Resurrection Man co-creator Jackson 'Butch' Guice is drawing one-page synopses for all six issues to recap the history of the character.
Resurrection Man: Quantum Karma #1 (of 6) is scheduled to hit shelves April 2. The first issue features a main cover by Jeff Dékal, with variant covers by series artist Anand RK, original co-creator Jackson 'Butch' Guice, and Dan Panosian. |
